Literacy Experience

Ever since I was a young child I have loved to read. I had a huge chest in my room that held all my books. I read a book every night before I went to bed. One series that I remember that I was really into was the Arthur series. I had almost every Arthur book ever made.

I believe I came to love reading as much as I do because of my first grade teacher. She was always encouraging reading and gave out prizes to her students if she caught them reading during a break time or in the halls. She really made reading fun and exciting. I remember that she would always start out the day with a story that related to something that we would be doing that day whether it was math or even science related, she incorporated some kind of picture or story book that went along with it. This positive exposure to reading and books I believe is the reason I grew up loving to read.

From this experience I have realized how important and beneficial literacy is to children. I have also realized that literacy can be incorporated into all subjects throughout the day which was demonstrated by my first grade teacher. As a future teacher I will do my best to make literacy a fun and exciting part of the students day. I hope I will be that teacher who influences their students just like my first grade teacher influenced me with literacy!
