Literacy Event

Growing up I loved reading. My parents taught me how to read at an early age and my first grade teacher especially nourished this love. I remember growing up reading up to five books at a time; to this day my entire basement is packed with books from my childhood. Unfortunately, around tenth grade when I started taking honors classes my love for reading diminished significantly. I was suddenly overwhelmed with all varieties of texts that were uninteresting and stressful to me. I began to hate reading and avoided it unless absolutely necessary. It wasn't until I had to write my first twenty page paper, however, that my love for reading began to resurface. It was around the time that I had to write this paper that I realized I was a successful writer because of all the reading that I had done. I decided then that I would make more of an effort to read again, since I truly believe that it's an extremely important part to success in life. To this day I still do not enjoy reading texts for classes, but I know that it's necessary and for this reason a very important goal for me in teaching will be to instill a love for reading in my students, or at the very least a recognition of it's necessity.
