Mini Lesson -Emilee
For my mini lessons I worked one-on-one with ELL students and the lowest reading group. I would take a student to the back table and we would practice writing their names, recognizing letters and also writing letters. I would use a variety of different tasks such as having the students write their name in sand or shaving cream using their fingers, having the students trace over their names with dry erase marker on a laminated sheet that has their name on it. I would also hold up cards that had different letters on them and had the student first say what the letter is and then what sound the letter made. Finally I would have the students use a blank sheet of paper and they would practice writing their names with a pencil saying each letter in their names as they were writing it. I found that these students respond really well to these types of tasks.

I love that you were able to work with an ELL student. My first experience in a classroom in TE 250 was in an ELL classroom, and I am always interested in hearing how others work with these students.
ReplyDeleteWhat grade are you in? Is there a reason they are still working with their names? Your suggestions are awesome for having students work with different mediums instead of simply writing their names all the time.
Do you ever do these things when you are working with your student even though it was not specifically suggested by the teacher? I feel like the student would really get excited about working with your new ideas!
Do you work with this student often? It would be really interesting if you could work with this student every week and see if they progress. The group I work with I work with every week, and the progress is awesome to watch.
